How To Start In Affiliate Marketing – A Step-By-Step Guide

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing is you earning a commission for recommending a product. Someone buys that product from your website. Very simple.

You do not have to produce that product, nor keep thousands of them in your garage. You don’t even have to collect money from them when they buy it, the company that markets the product does all of that for you.

Pretty Cool huh?

How to Start in Affiliate Marketing is the question here. Here is your step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Are You Willing To Work Hard To Succeed?

This is the reality, my friend. In the Internet Marketing World there are millions of us trying to do the very same thing, and that is to make a consistent, residual income from our computers.

We want our computers to be making sales for us night and day, right?

The fact is, the vast majority of those millions who start to learn about Affiliate Marketing quit too soon before they succeed. The reason they quit is that they are looking for a fast buck. That is NOT what Affilate Marketing is about!

As the saying goes, and it is true, anything worthwhile takes hard work. Many go to college to pursue a career and work long and hard hours studying the material for four long years.

After four years they hope they get a good job.

It is practically guaranteed you will succeed in Affiliate Marketing if you only give it your all for at least one year.

Think about it this way, the person who spends all their money and time going to college for four years probably has quite a bit of debt to pay off after they are done. Many take decades to pay that debt off.

But with Affiliate Marketing it is indeed possible after only one year to be making a full time income from your home and never have to work a 9 to 5 job another day of your life. Is that worth it to you? I think it is.

Step 2: What Products or Services are You Passionate About?

This is a very important part of the affiliate marketing process. As I said in the first step, we need to commit ourselves to work hard for at least a year.

Part of that work will be writing a lot about our niche, also known as our specific product field.

So we need to pick a product or service we are passionate about and have at least an intermediate amount of knowledge. We do not need to be an expert to write about it.

Because of the Internet we can always research the product to get expert knowledge to share on our blog posts.

Examples of Niches are golf clubs, bicycles, and camping equipment to name a few. Pick something you love to do because you are going to be doing a lot of writing about it.

Step 3: Create A Website That You Own

I remember about twenty years ago I went to a Website promotion seminar called Stores Online.

It was in a restaurant and they were basically trying to sell us a website store and the training needed to make it produce us an income.

The cost was over One Thousand dollars!

That was twenty years ago, yes, things have changed. You can easily get a Free website today, and you can make it your own by buying your own name for it, or domain for about $15 per year.

And yes, I did buy from them at that restaurant promotion, but regret ever doing it because it was only after I paid them $1000 they told me I need about five thousand to promote it!

There are many places you can get a free website, if you scroll to the end of this article I have some recommendations for you.

Step 4: Learn How To Build and Promote Your Websitecomputer screen on a desk

There are tons of Free YouTube Videos that will show you how to do these things.

Just Google Build Website, and Promote Website and you will see.

It is important to understand that it will take quite a bit of time to build your website to get it to look the way you want it to look.

It will also take a lot of time to learn how to promote your website. It is of no use to have a website if nobody ever sees it. The only way for people to see it is if it comes up in Google or Yahoos search results.

Or, if you are advertising your website with a paid ad on Google, Facebook, or possibly some free ad sites.

Now, think of how you find things on the internet. Perhaps you are looking to buy a multivitamin. You Google buy multivitamin and up comes the results.

What you are looking at is the first page of Google. Over 90% of people will click on one of those links that are there on the first page.

That is our goal, to get you onto the first page of Google, if we do that we are sure to get a LOT of traffic coming to our website. A lot of traffic means a lot of sales.

Step 5: Sign up With Amazon as an Affiliate Associate

Earlier this year (2019) Amazon passed Walmart in online sales for the very first time. In 2017 the marketing giant had sales of 3 Billion and in 2018 around 10 billion.

Amazon requires you to have a website before you can sign up as an affiliate associate.

After Amazon accepts you into their Affiliate Program, they also require your website to make at least three sales within a six-month period, or they will cancel your partnership with them.

So it is important to learn as quick as possible how to get onto the first page of Google.

Keep in mind that you will not make any money if you tell your friends or family about your website and ask them to buy from it by clicking on your Amazon banner ad.

Amazon and the other companies know who your family and friends are and will not give you any commission if they buy from your ad. So you must learn how to promote your website to other people.

I know, I do not think it’s fair either, but that’s just the way it is. There are many other Affiliate Programs out there for you to join, just do a search and take a look at the ones that are relevant to what you want to sell.

Once an Affiliate Program accepts you, they give you a special link that allows the merchant to track all people who click your link. That is how they keep track of your sales and pay you.

Step 6: Create High Quality Content With Great Keywords

It is very important to find and use a good Key Word search tool before you begin to write. A key word search tool will let you know about your competition that you have to get onto Googles first page.

There are many free key word search tools, you can use this free one that I use by clicking on this text.

Now write about your niche using original and high quality content. You want to write at least two articles per week that are over one thousand words.

Depending on the amount of time available to you, writing 3 or 4 per week is even better.

The more quality, key word rich content you produce, the quicker you will get indexed with Google. Getting indexed with your website is your first goal, after that you work on getting ranked, on page one ASAP.

Step 7: Optimize the Page and Track your Rank in Google

Optimize means to keep doing the things that you have learned to get your website to get higher and higher within the ranks of Google. Our goal is to be on the first page of the search results.

Google has a free tool called Google Search Console that you can sign up with and see how your pages and posts are doing with Google.

  1. Hello Phil, I must say that this article is very helpful and informative. I have heard about affiliate marketing is the best method for earning money online and it truly is. Currently, I live from affiliate marketing and I am glad there are articles like this to explain to people how to start with it.

    • Yes Dan, IMO Affiliate Marketing is the future for us network marketing, it is much easier, and the average person can do it.

  2. Wow! Thank you for the post.

I am personally learning to get out of my comfort zone / rat race (work 9 to 5). However, to be honest I still have a fear of getting out of this zone, none other than the financial issues.

Maybe after tonight, I will try to start practicing what you write here.

But let me ask, you said that give at least one year. Why should so?
Approximately how much income can you get each month based on your experience (after 1 year learning)?

    • Hi Ronny, thanks for your comments and question.  You need to let your website get ranked with Google, and that takes time for EVERYONE.   You must be patient.

If you do all the right things you can be making over 1K per month after a year, some make more, some make less, it depends a lot on how hard a worker you on, with your website.
